Dear Younger Me Pt.1

Dear Younger Me: 6 Lessons I Wish I Learned Sooner

1. Don’t Go to College Just Because Everyone Else Is

Dear younger me,

You’re going to feel pressured to jump straight into college after high school because it’s what most people do and what others expect of you. But don’t.

Don’t go unless you’re almost 100% certain that what you’re pursuing is something you’re willing to fully commit yourself to. Otherwise, you may end up spending years chasing a path that was never truly yours.

Instead, give yourself permission to explore. Volunteer. Shadow professionals. Try different jobs. Pick up hobbies. Travel if you can. Say yes to experiences that help you discover who you are and what genuinely excites you.

When you find something you’re meant to do, you’ll recognize it. It won’t always be easy, but it will feel worth pursuing.

Remember, life is not a race. Everyone’s journey unfolds differently, and there is no prize for reaching milestones before everyone else. Your timeline doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Trust that God has a unique plan for your life, even if it doesn’t make sense yet.

Journal Prompt:
What am I doing because I truly want it, and what am I doing because I think I’m supposed to?

2. Speak Up for Yourself

Dear younger me,

One thing’s for certain and two things are for sure: if you don’t learn to speak up for yourself, you may end up living a life filled with things you never truly wanted.

You are the author of your own story. You decide what belongs in your life—not anyone else.

If you don’t like something, speak up. If you want something, speak up. If something doesn’t feel right, say something.

There will be times when you’ll want to bite your tongue because you’re afraid of making someone angry or disappointing them. You’ll convince yourself it’s easier to stay quiet than to risk conflict.

But, honey, every time you silence yourself, a tiny piece of your confidence disappears.

Your voice matters. Your thoughts matter. Your needs matter. The people who truly love and respect you will value your honesty, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Don’t spend your life making yourself smaller just to make everyone else comfortable.

Journal Prompt:
Where have I been choosing comfort over honesty?

3. Please Don’t Move In With That Boyfriend

Dear younger me,

When your boyfriend asks you to move in with him, it’s going to seem like a good idea. You’ll tell yourself it will bring you closer, strengthen the relationship, or make things easier.

But trust me—really think this through.

Living together won’t fix poor communication, build trust, or create commitment where it doesn’t already exist.

If you have a gut feeling telling you not to do it, please listen. That quiet voice inside you is there for a reason.

Deep down, you already know this isn’t a decision that aligns with your values, so don’t ignore that conviction just because you’re afraid of losing the relationship.

If you choose to move in anyway, you’ll carry regrets that will change your life in more ways than one.

Choosing yourself and your values may feel difficult in the moment, but it will save you from heartache later.

Journal Prompt:
Am I making this decision because it aligns with my values, or because I’m afraid of losing someone?

4. Keep Creating

Dear younger me,

When you find that one thing you truly love doing, don’t stop.

Even if it doesn’t fit society’s definition of “success,” keep going. This is your life, not theirs. You weren’t created to live according to someone else’s expectations.

If you give up on what sets your soul on fire, you may spend years in places where you know deep down you don’t belong—doing work that leaves your heart empty when you could have been building a life that fulfills you.

People will judge you. Some will tell you to choose the “safer” path. Others may try to convince you that college is the only way to be successful.

Listen respectfully, but don’t let other people’s opinions become louder than God’s direction for your life. Pray about it, trust His timing, and keep creating. The gifts He’s given you were never meant to stay hidden.

One day, you’ll be grateful you didn’t quit.

Journal Prompt:
What would I create, and what would I be doing, if the only opinion I cared about was my own?

5. Show Up as the Prize

Dear younger me,

I know having a boyfriend sounds exciting, but you really have two choices.

You can have the relationship while continuing to pour more time, energy, and love into yourself than into anyone else. Or you can choose to stay single and fully focus on becoming the woman you’re meant to be.

Choose wisely.

And one more thing: stop trying to convince people to choose you.

Stop auditioning for love. Stop shrinking yourself to fit someone else’s expectations. The right people won’t need to be persuaded to see your worth.

Walk into every room remembering that you are already enough. You deserve to be treated with kindness, respect, and genuine love—not because you’ve earned it, but because of who you are.

You are precious. You are rare. Never let anyone make you question your value.

The moment you stop chasing validation is the moment you’ll begin attracting relationships that reflect the respect you have for yourself.

Journal Prompt:
Where in my life am I trying to earn something that I should simply receive?

6. Don’t Confuse Peace with Boredom

Dear younger me,

There will be days when you wish you were always being invited somewhere. Days when you wish you had a party to attend or a packed social calendar. There will also be moments when you’ll wish you had a significant other.

But be patient.

Don’t mistake peace for boredom.

Not every invitation is a blessing, and not every relationship is meant for you. Some friend groups bring unnecessary drama, and many relationships can leave you feeling more stressed than supported.

Instead of chasing constant excitement, learn to appreciate the quiet seasons. Enjoy the peace you’ve been given. Enjoy your own company. Use this time to grow, heal, create, and become the person God is preparing you to be.

In the right season, God will bring the right people into your life—people who add to your peace, not subtract from it.

Until then, don’t rush what God is asking you to wait for.

Enjoy the peace. Enjoy the process. And most importantly, enjoy becoming you.

Journal Prompt:
What does a “boring” day look like? Could it actually be a peaceful one?

A Letter to Anyone Reading This

If no one has told you lately, you don’t have to have everything figured out.

The version of you who made mistakes isn’t someone to be ashamed of. She’s the reason you’re becoming the person you are today.

Maybe you needed to live through certain chapters so you could write this one.

Maybe every setback, every wrong turn, every heartbreak, and every unanswered prayer was preparing you for the life you’re stepping into now.

And if you’re still learning some of these lessons, you’re in good company.

So am I.

We’re all growing. We’re all healing. We’re all becoming.

Give yourself grace. Trust God’s timing. Keep choosing what aligns with your values, even when it’s difficult. And never stop believing that the life you’re hoping for is still possible.

Thank you for letting me share a small piece of my story with you. My prayer is that these lessons encourage you to trust yourself a little more, love yourself a little deeper, and walk confidently in the direction God is leading you.

With love,

Your older friend ❤️
